In a complementary effort to reduce livestock mortality, BWCDO carries out rounds of livestock vaccinations periodically with assistance from the Snow Leopard Network and local veterinary departments in Skardu, Baltistan. Although 2-3% of livestock populations are lost to snow leopard predation, illness claims more than 15%. Farmers can better endure livestock losses caused by snow leopards if illness mortality is reduced since they would still have more cattle overall at the end of the year. Vaccinations are carried out against Mange, Foot and Mouth, Anthrax, and Brucellosis which are deadly to livestock. The number of livestock this program has saved from disease greatly outnumbers the amount of livestock taken each year by snow leopards.
